PS 290Q - A.C.E. Academy for Scholars at the Geraldine Ferraro Campus
55-20 Metropolitan Avenue, Ridgewood, NY 11385
We are thrilled to announce our partnership with PS 290Q! They create real-world connections using a cross-disciplinary approach through project-based learning to foster our scholars’ independence, perseverance, and self-expression. The classes are open to all PS 290Q K-5 students, from beginner to advanced levels. The lesson plans will be adjusted based on the level of the students.
-
For beginner levels: The students will learn the basics of chess and build a solid foundation needed to move ahead - from the movements and values of the pieces, to tactics and different checkmate patterns.
-
For intermediate levels: The students will have a better understanding of the patterns, tactics, and principles in the opening, middle game, and end game.
-
For advanced levels: The students will focus on the strategizing, thinking process, and have a deep understanding of different openings and endgame techniques.
The afterschool program begins with a gathering of all students and instructors in the gym. Children will enjoy some playtime before moving to the classroom for a snack break. Each session will include a combination of:
-
Interactive Discussions: Exploring chess concepts and strategies.
-
Engaging Puzzles: Sharpening analytical and problem-solving skills.
-
Dynamic Games: Applying learned concepts in a fun and competitive setting.
-
Other Chess-Related Activities: Expanding knowledge through various methods.
The program concludes with a period dedicated to creative arts or continued chess play.
What's New? We hope to inspire and encourage our students to continue learning even outside of our program. All students registered for the full program will receive a FREE Chesskid Gold Membership. This membership grants access to a wide range of exciting features to enhance the chess learning:
-
Unlimited puzzles and lessons: Sharpen the tactical skills and deepen understanding of chess principles.
-
Thousands of interactive computer opponents: Test your strategies and improve your game play.
-
Online challenges: Connect with friends and classmates for friendly matches.
-
Detailed game analysis: Gain valuable insights into the games to identify areas for improvement.
Late Pick-up Fee Policy: Parents or guardians are kindly reminded that pick-up time for children is scheduled for 4:00 PM. A grace period until 4:15 PM is provided to accommodate unforeseen circumstances. A late pick-up fee of $25 will be charged for the first 15 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. For every additional minute after the initial 15 minutes, an additional $1 per minute will be charged. This fee is payable directly to the instructor on the day of the late pick-up. This fee is implemented to ensure the efficient operation of the program and to respect the time of our staff. It is imperative that children are picked-up punctually to maintain the safety and well-being of all children under our care. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to this policy.
