Astoria Lutheran School

31-20 21st Ave, Astoria, NY 11105

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Astoria Lutheran School! The classes are open to all Astoria Lutheran School students, from beginner to advanced levels, and our lesson plans will be adjusted to meet each student's needs.

  • For beginner levels: The students will learn the basics of chess and build a solid foundation needed to move ahead - from the movements and values of the pieces, to tactics and different checkmate patterns.

  • For intermediate levels: The students will have a better understanding of the patterns, tactics, and principles in the opening, middle game, and end game.

  • For advanced levels: The students will focus on the strategizing, thinking process, and have a deep understanding of different openings and endgame techniques.

The afterschool program begins with a gathering of all students and instructors in the designated meeting area. Students will have a short break and can bring a snack if they'd like. Each session will include a combination of:

  • Interactive Discussions: Exploring chess concepts and strategies.

  • Engaging Puzzles: Sharpening analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Dynamic Games: Applying learned concepts in a fun and competitive setting.

  • Other Chess-Related Activities: Expanding knowledge through various methods.

The program concludes with a period dedicated to creative arts or continued chess play.

Afterschool Program Behavior Policy: The New York Chess Academy afterschool program is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and enriching environment for all participants. To maintain this standard, we have established a three-strike policy to address instances of misbehavior. This policy is aligned with New York City guidelines for youth programs.

  • Level 1: Verbal Warning

  • Level 2: Written Warning and Meeting

  • Level 3: Suspension or Expulsion

By enrolling in the program, you agree to adhere to the policy. Please review the complete program behavior policy
